Lothíriel of Minas Tirith

If you have a character in our game, you will find their journal in this area, as well as some stickied threads near the top of the list for songs and stories. As well Player-heroes (PHs), as they are called in The One Ring, have some basic information here concerning how to build them. A journal means you have the opportunity to develop your character's depth to help you be able to get into them, even in a slow-flow forum-based setting such as our game. Have fun with it... using your journal and helping the group with songs may even lead you to gaining experience for posting about them.

(NOTE: Feel free to delete THIS comment and the one, above, as you like, keeping the others from Fellowship Focus, below, and put your character's history, background, and any other relevant information or notes concerning your character, here. This is YOUR Journal for Lothíriel, so you're welcome, as with EVERYONE else, to move things around to your heart's content; the space is provided entirely for you to edit as you see fit. When it comes to the History portion, for what Lothíriel knows of the world, I do that randomly and won't even begin that process until her character is completed and I have something to work with.)

Fellowship Focus:
(NOTE: Your Fellowship Focus is another person in the Company you have some manner of connection to. You may spend Hope to help this individual, including giving it to them. It is up to the LoreMaster when and how you rejuvenate Hope, but using Hope for the benefit of your Fellowship Focus, but which also aids the Company, is cause for immediate rejuvenation.)

Company Roles ~ Here find the definitions of the four roles in the game. At the beginning of each new Journey Phase, the Company selects who will play in which roles: Guide (1 only), Scout, Huntsman, and/or Look-out Man. While each character may be able to fill multiple roles, as listed, only one character can hold the primary slot of each role.
  • Guide: One companion has the responsibility of guiding the group during the journey. The Guide of the company is responsible for decisions, such as when the group should stop for a rest or how to manage their reserves of food. The main asset of a good Guide is a superior Travel skill. There is never more than one Guide, as they could also be considered to be the Captain for the Company.

  • Scout: A character acting as a Scout can be called upon to find a suitable location for setting up camp, or when a situation forces the company to abandon the road it was following to find a new one. Leaving a well-trodden path is difficult and dangerous, involving climbing up steep hills, wading wide streams or scaling doubtful paths along cliff-sides. A good Scout is characterized by a decent Explore skill. There may be more than one Scout, although first-come first-served is the Primary. Anyone else may act as a Secondary as long as they have a good Explore skill.

  • Hunter: When traveling with haste, a company can soon run out of provisions, especially when completing a journey that is going to take several weeks. A companion skilled at Hunting is always ready to track prey into the woods before making camp. There may be more than one Hunter, though the first one to choose Hunter is the Primary; it is expected that all will hunt, but only those with at least one Rank in Hunting may be called on to roll that skill.

  • Look-out: A journey brings a company through wildly different territories, most of them dangerous. The Look-out is a vital duty that often puts a hero in the position of saving the lives of all members of a group, or of dooming them all through inattention. The Look-out’s skill is Awareness, usually tested at the LoreMaster’s request. Though there is one Primary Look-out, everyone can aid in the Look-out's effort by either requesting to make an Awareness roll, or if the LoreMaster rolls for the Player-hero passively.)

LOTHÍRIEL OF MINAS TIRITH
Ross S.

Culture
Calling
Shadow Weakness
Standard of Living
Woman of Gondor
Leader
Lure of Power
Prosperous

Cultural Blessing: - Men of Valor and Wisdom –
Once accounted among the High Men, the Dúnedain of the South have diminished. Yet, the great deeds committed by the best among them tell that the nobility of the kings of old isn’t fully spent yet. To gain a new rank in Wisdom or Valor, you pay an additional Experience cost equal to the rank you are acquiring. Then, if your Wisdom rating is equal to or superior to your Valor, when you roll an Image using any common skill you can roll the Feat die again, keeping the new result. Conversely, if your Valor rating is superior to your Wisdom, apply this ability to your attack rolls.

Background: Soldier of Gondor - You were but a child when you first learnt how to properly sharpen the blade of your family sword. Since that day, you have taken more meals in your company’s storehouses and butteries than in your home, and have walked for miles to the words of ancient marching songs. But no toil or hardship is too grievous for you, for when you climb up the steps leading to the highest battlements of the City to look out on the lands below, you see how much would be at stake, should a war against the Nameless One finally come.

Calling: Leader - The Wise know that advice is a dangerous gift, as all courses may run ill. Worse is the case of a leader of men, as when his actions go amiss, many suffer as a consequence. But when the world is on the brink of ruin, it is the duty of all men of worth to rise and take the lead, whatever the risk of making the wrong choices. You have decided to put your judgement to the service of others, to guide them in this dark hour. But you don’t want others to heed your commands out of fear or obedience – you want them to follow you because they trust in your counsel.

Calling Trait: Leadership-You possess the capability to win the trust of others and push them to action. When under pressure, other men naturally turn to you for guidance, as ducklings follow their mother, or wolf pups heed their father.

- TRAITS -
Specialty: Boating-You know how to handle a boat in the running waters of a river, or in the tricky currents of a lake.

Specialty: Lore of Gondor - bestows the benefits granted by both Old Lore and Region-lore (Gondor).

Old Lore - You are learned in the traditions and the rumour of bygone days. Your knowledge may derive from different sources, from stories heard around the fire to the dusty records of a chronicler.

Region-Lore (Gondor) - You may call upon your knowledge of an area when planning to traverse it as part of your journey.

Distinctive Feature: Fair [Charming]- You are considered beautiful by most people, even by those not belonging to your folk.

Distinctive Feature: Fierce [Angry]- When provoked by deed or word, or when you deem it necessary, you let loose your savage side, demonstrating your aggressiveness.

The One Ring
History of the Setting

(NOTE: The setting of The One Ring is VERY rich, and your Player-hero will know and/or understand different aspects of that history than other Player-heroes, depending on various aspects of their cultural and historical makeup. This post allows you to understand what your character knows of the world. This knowledge will likely change over time as, through game-play, your character learns more of the world, of its history, background, and setting, and as the game itself progresses.)

Sanctuaries: Minas Tirith (Standing 1)
Patrons: Turgon, Steward
http://www.wolvesau.net/wh/pics/Lothiriel_Naurmegil.png
Naurmegil's Background
A beautiful long sword forged of mithril and steel inlaid with a fire opal in the pommel. Forged in Rivendell during the 3 years of preparation by the Last Alliance of Elves and Men sometime during S.A 3430-3431. This sword was used by a captain of King Elendil's men and nearly lost in the final battle. It was recovered by an ancestor of Lothíriel, her great, great grandfather Bergil who brought it back to Minas Anor. The sword has since been passed down through her family or been stored in the armories of Minas Anor until someone earned the right to wield it. Lothíriel earned that right and has been granted this heirloom of her family and of Minas Tirith.

Background
Lothíriel was born on October 29th, T.A 2927 in Minas Tirith to Hirluin and Lôrwend. Her father Hirluin was a member of the citadel guard and often was busy defending Minas Tirith from the evils of Mordor or traveling as a guard/escort for various important members of the court. He served the previous Steward and the current one Turgon. She grew up under the loving care of her mother and father and became a strong and fair lady of Minas Tirith. He kept an eye on his only child as she grew up and began teaching her how to defend herself should the city ever be breached or she found herself facing men or beasts of ill repute. Her father saw the strength of character in his daughter as they trained outside the city gates one day. She surpassed his expectations when she disarmed him and picked up the sword Naurmegil which had been in her family for several generations. Suddenly, they were attacked by several spies of the enemy who were attempting to sneak into the city and do evil things. Her father told her to run, but she stay and fought alongside her father as her mother had passed over year prior and she feared for her father’s safety if the citadel guards did not arrive in time. To Hirluin’s surprise, she held her own and wielded Naurmegil well and they killed or drove away these evil foul minions of shadow. Several citadel guards came to help or give chase, but they ended up just witnessing the end of the encounter and helping take Lothíriel and her father to see the steward Turgon. They gave him a report of their encounter and Hirluin spoke of his daughter’s skill at arms and how she had grown. The steward questioned her further and was convinced after checking with the guards who had escorted them to him that she would be worthy of the citadel. He assigned her arms and armor befitting a member of his guard and told her she had earned the right to use her family’s heirloom in defense of the city. Once she left to be fitted, the steward spoke to her father Hirluin about finding out more about the activity of the enemy and how these spies got so close to the city walls. Hirluin said he would leave after he said goodbye to his daughter and recovered from the day’s events. The next day he left in disguise to travel amongst the people and places of Middle-Earth to find out what he could of the enemy’s movements and to bring this back to the steward. Lothíriel was distraught her father was sent on this mission in his later years and was worried he might befall some horrible end, but she knew it was his duty as was hers in protecting Minas Tirith and defending the people of the White City. She served for a year, turning 19 and not hearing from her father. She did her duty and the summer of T.A. 2946 she went to speak to the steward Turgon and asked to go find news of what might have befell her father and to hunt out the enemy and speak to other nations about the strength of Gondor and renew alliances if possible. The steward was impressed by her pride and strength of character and had never heard anything negative about her service so far so he agreed to let her go. He gave her his blessing and sent her on her way. She packed her gear and headed out into the wilds. Her travels have taken her far and wide and she’s now spending winter in a mining town in the northern Dalelands up near the Withered Heath. A place known as Edric’s Town, there she is helping Lady Sara the widowed ruler by increasing the skill of her remaining warriors by training them. As well as helping defend the village against wolves and other evils from the Withered Heath or the surrounding lands.

The Tale of Years
(NOTE: The following comes as a result of our playing the game, and what effects your Fellowship has on the world...)

T.A. 2946; Character’s 19th year in Middle Earth; born in 2927, October 29th.
  • Year 2946: As the fifth anniversary of the Battle of the Five Armies draws near, folk from both sides of the Misty Mountains, Rhovanion and Eriador, from all points North and South, from the Upper Vales of the Great River to Lorien in the South, have begun to gather, to such populations that camps within and around the forests between Lake-town and Dale have begun to grow. Purpose is given to the Free Peoples of Middle-earth in these waning days of the East, and with that purpose comes prosperity, growth, and hope that the Shadow will soon be vanquished.
_______________________________
The Recent Past
  • Year 2941: A group of the Free Peoples come to free the North from the threat of a Dragon.

A series of unlikely events lead to the death of Smaug and to the destruction of Lake-town.

  • Year 2943: The Master of Lake-town falls victim to the Dragon-sickness and leaves, carrying with him most of the gold given to him by Bard for the help of the Lake-people. Initially helped by some companions, he is then abandoned and dies of starvation in the Waste.

  • Year 2944-5: The reconstruction of Dale and Lake-town are completed on the Long Lake and trade resumes up and down the Running River.
_______________________________
_______________________________
Old Lore
  • Year 2063: The Woodmen of the Eaves of Mirkwood multiply and prosper from this time, establishing settlements both east and west of the Great River, and within the great forest.

  • Year 2460: From this time many people choose to leave the region and go south.

  • Year 2510: Eorl the Young, lord of the Horse-folk of the North, leads his people from the upper vales of the river Anduin to live as free Men in the plains of Calenardhon, far in the distant South. He becomes the first King of the Mark of the Riders.

  • Year 2793: The Dwarves of Durin’s folk, strengthened by great forces sent from the Houses of the other Fathers of the Dwarves, begin a long and cruel war against the Orcs of the Misty Mountains.

  • Year 2799: The final battle of the War of the Dwarves and Orcs is fought, though the outcome is unknown.

  • Year 2911: An extremely fierce and long cold season begins in November. Remembered as the Fell Winter, its frozen grip doesn’t release the regions of the North from snow and ice for five months. Rivers and lakes are frozen over, and white wolves descend from the frozen wastes of the far North.

LoreMaster Note I hope you don't mind, Ross, but I took the liberty of downloading, modifying the size and corners into a PNG round, uploaded and coded this to look real nice? The pic of Naurmegil, from Pinterest, wasn't showing up because Pinterest operates on secure servers.

Out-of-Character Looks fantastic, thank you so much. I noticed I don't have AP etc yet, guess you'll get to that eventually, which is fine. I'm looking forward to joining.

Closing on Midnight, 17 March 2947, Great Room of Lady Sara's home in Edric's Town
"Lothíriel of the White City," Lady Sara addresses you in a covering of several layers bed-clothes. You were summoned to the Great Room of the lady's residence late at night, the call apparently very urgent so you are in your bed-clothes, likewise.

"You have come North by your own means and hand, you have a strength about you I wish I knew, and at my behest you have been training the soldiers of Edric's Town, and me from time-to-time, when a lack of duties permitted. I am grateful for this, my Sister of Gondor, but I must ask you for something more, if I may?" Worry creases her brow and the parchment she holds has crumpled under the strength of what you might think to be nearly panicked hands.

Lothíriel's eyes light up at the formal greeting, she bows carefully to not flash herself before the ruler of Edric's Town, "M'lady I am at your service. Thank you for your hospitality and for sheltering me during my stay here. I come North for many of my own reasons and have enjoyed giving courage and strength to you and your people. How may I help you and strengthen Gondor's bond to the people of the North?"

"I humbly request... and I know it is not your war, here... to take some of our fighters with you to Galford in the South, warn the owner of the Lantern and the townsfolk there, of the impending threat of Orcs and Goblin-men anew in our region." You hear a heavy boot-fall and, though you were well-aware of Edmond, the Guard Captain of Edric's Town and a close friend to Lady Sara, this is the first time you have had an opportunity to acknowledge him. Lady Sara stands barely a half-foot above five and is beautiful in a mousy way, a pointed nose below a long bridge with carefully sculpted eyebrows in her aquiline face, light brown eyes set slightly within their sockets, leaving no depth of darkness, as if sunken, and cheeks rounded to tiny balls of bone beneath an otherwise perfect complexion. You know, from speaking with her at length, that her hardships are typical for women of this age, though she has escaped the greater portion of them until recently; thus, her beauty remains intact.

Edmond, on the other hand, is a hard man, an injured and uneven jawline and a nose that has seen more than its fair share of breakage, with scraggly beard and mustache covering features that only a Mother could love, a scar learnt from his Father as he was learning to fight. He stands more than two meters in height and is intimidating, perhaps even for you, as his shoulders stretch out to half his height, heavily muscled even beneath the concealment of the skins and furs covering them. You already know, from an early encounter at the beginning of Winter, after Lady Sara asked you to train her troops, including Edmond, which rankled for him, that his hard as steel form, large and unwieldy, is not as unwieldy as many presuppose, and you have not underestimated him, again. Still, after his disagreement with the Lady about asking you to train them, once you were able to gain his respect, which included scarring him on the forehead, right at the hairline, he shows no animus toward you at all.

"Vali, the owner of the Lantern and Thegn of the town that has grown about it," she continues, "has a bargain with the Wood Elves, who've sworn to come to the defense of the town if so called. They trade with Vali whom, as I understand it, has been fair and forthright, as are his people, in their dealings with the Elves. They can be trusted and, at Vali's word, Thranduil-King will send defenders to come. I hope," She hands you the piece of parchment, after smoothing it somewhat against her robe-covered, yet flat stomach, and continues,

"A new Orc-captain has appeared several times over the past months of the Winter. Your aid in our defense has allowed us to send scouts to survey the lands about Edric's Town, to see where we may need to improve our defenses. As the Sun was disappearing behind the Misty Mountains, one of our scouts, Tomasz, returned with this map and the numbers written upon it. A massive Orc camp has been found less than a day's march to the East, and the numbers," you take a look at the map, which depicts the contours of the "wall" separating the Northern Dale-lands from the Withered Heath, relative distances between the high Dwarf-wrought walls of Edric's Town and the Orc-camp, the large copse of trees nearer the Orc-camp than Edric's Town, and some guesses and relative strength values of the forces, there.

Tomasz was required to remain within the woods until he could return three days later, an Orc patrol outpost camped near him during that time, so he couldn't move, and thus he continued his scouting from his concealed location and determined the Orc-captain was sending out parties to gather Warg's for training. The moment he could leave, he lit out for home.

"I will send a rider with you, Hathal the Butcher's Son, who will make his way to King Bard with a request for aid, when you turn in toward Galford. You may take up to five men with you for defensive purposes, if you must." You know the town has only twenty-two chosen defenders, including Edmond their Captain, against a potential horde of more than one-hundred plus Wargs. "I am loathe to ask you to go, now, but I offer you some of my skins and furs for the journey, to keep you warm, as well as two gold now, and three when you return, if you will go for us?" Edmond, you can see, is beside himself, but he honors the truth of Lady Sara's words, that he will stay, the strongest and most resilient fighter in the town, next to you.

"Are you willing, m'Lady?"

"Are you willing, m'Lady?"
Lothíriel listens intently as Lady Sara informs her about the growing threat from the nearby orc / goblin encampment. Lothíriel flexes her sword hand, wishing she had her sword on her hip. Her eyes lock with Edmond's, taking in his demeanor concerning this information as she continues listening. When Lady Sara finishes and asks her question Lothíriel doesn't stutter or delay, "By the White Tree I am willing m'lady. I shall see this message delivered and our friends and allies roused against the Shadow. I will gladly help you for Gondor will need all the free peoples should the black gates open along Mordor's walls. If I go alone I can hide myself better and attract less attention than a group of heavily armed and mounted soldiers. Keep your men here, but send Hathal to warn Dale/Lake-Town of course. The safety of Edric's Town is vital as well as your own. My father and the men of Gondor taught me well, I will not falter in this quest. Let me prepare and head out at dawn so to keep the shadow from tracking me in the dark."

Lady Sara visibly deflates, a great deal of worry immediately sliding off her shoulders with your consent to go.

"Though this journey is short and in the open and the dangers you truly face in that direction are not immediate, is there ought you need for this journey?" You had not noticed until now, but her face had a quaver to it before your consent, which is now gone. You know new stress will replace that which you've just removed, but for the moment the Lady is at peace.

Lothíriel looks at Lady Sara, "I would of course take some supplies, another quiver of arrows and a small axe for chopping wood or brambles wouldn't be unwise. I assume you'll provide me with a good steed and that Hathal will be able to handle his own once he rides to Dale. The gold and furs you offered will certainly be welcomed, although, gold isn't why I'll do this."

Lady Sara smiles and answers simply, "You shall have all you need. Sir Edmund," she turns to her Guard-captain, who only smiles at you and says,

"You know very well where our armory is," he points toward the exit from Lady Sara's chambers and continues to explain as you're both leaving, Lady Sara calling for luck, behind you, "I'll awaken Aldor and have him prepare two of our finest. He'll choose those and prepare them. After that, you'll be left to your own devices. I will have Hathal waiting at the livery at dawn. The Lady is already preparing the message for Vali and the Wood Elves."
LoreMaster Note Alright, I'll add what you've requested to your sheet in a minute or three, though it might not go up right away. I have to go back and remove Endurance loss for the end of the other fight. When you're ready, however, feel free to begin the next part of the story; if you have the books, I welcome you to reference those to write it, especially Erebor, since it outlines the Northern Dale-lands.

Lothíriel smiles, "I do indeed know well where it is." She steps out with Edmund and heads to the armory, collecting an additional quiver of arrows and a hand axe for chopping wood or orcs. "I'm used to being left to my own devices, I did travel here all the way from Gondor on my own. I shall meet Hathal at the livery at dawn then." She gives Edmund a warrior's embrace and returns to her humble quarters. She'll pack her gear and prep her arms and armor for the morning. She will sleep and get up, washing up, putting on her armor and securing her weapon belt to her waist. She'll sling her bow, quivers and her pack and pick up her shield. She'll say a prayer to the Valar and to her father before heading to the livery. As she steps out into the morning sun, she'll let the sun gleam upon her polished armor and shield giving hope to all who see her in her gleaming armor and the White Tree on her shield and breastplate.

LoreMaster Note Ross, on moving to the next step of our story with the main Company, I will also update, here. Did you say something about NOT receiving notifications from here... I guess I'll find out if you respond to this and if you've come on a notification. phpBB is notorious for having bad email service for notifications, or anything else for that matter.
