Arphenion "Artorius" Annunion Ranger of the North - Bryce

If you have a character in our game, you will find their journal in this area, as well as some stickied threads near the top of the list for songs and stories. As well Player-heroes (PHs), as they are called in The One Ring, have some basic information here concerning how to build them. A journal means you have the opportunity to develop your character's depth to help you be able to get into them, even in a slow-flow forum-based setting such as our game. Have fun with it... using your journal and helping the group with songs may even lead you to gaining experience for posting about them.

"Perhaps, if I stay completely still and I am perfectly quiet I may see her walk by. The air may be deathly cold but I endure it just to feel the touch of her hand..."

The Ranger sat in the darkened room of the inn, disturbed by the dream? But no, not a dream, an awakening. Few folk could sense those gone and even fewer could see their spirits, but here he was with vision anew. Glancing outside the window the world was now of a different light to him. Shadows in places where there should be light, auras around folk and incorporeal faces flashing past as people hurried by, as if walking beside them but from another plain of existence.

Minutes ticked past but she never did walk past, he may of sat there for hours, days, years even and yet he would never feel her touch again, nor hear her voice or taste her lips. Her last words were a final farewell. As he sits in the darkness, witnessing all that others may never see he whispers his own final farewell to Evael.

"Nínion anin gwannad lîn Evael, le melin. Radathon drî i thraw hen ned i postol."
(I mourn your passing Evael, I love you. I will find a way through this wilderness while you rest.)

And in the cold, black room - Arphenion Annunion wept.

Things had changed for Artorius, things were always changing. That is the way of the world and it will always be the way of the world. People, cultures, lifestyles and beliefs were this huge bundle of choas which was always evolving and moving, for better or for worse.

The Ranger let out a deep sigh as he closed the ancient journal and tossed it back into the darkness. He found it on the ground while in the dark passage. Dwarven, but written in common. It seems the Dwarf was a bastard of an old house, kicked out for being sired to an unmarried couple and the shame brought upon them caused them to exile him when he was old enough to fend for himself. The book explained his time out of the caves, nothing grand, mainly simple work and abuse for his height from the tall folk he met.

It was not a pleasant read but the heartache which was truely felt by the Ranger was that of his lost customs. The Dwarf was not accepted by his own folk and the Men and Women he dwelt close to shunned him, and his beliefs.

The Ranger felt empathy for him, having to watch his words when around folk not of the Dúnedain. They followed the old ways, believed in the old Gods and remembered the Star Isle. Folk now were not kind to these memories and it was one of the reasons his kin were treated with such hostility.

Studying his hands, he spoke a few lines in a sad tone.

It's the nature of time,
That the old ways must give in.
It's the nature of time,
That the new ways comes in sin.
When the new meets the old,
It always ends the ancient ways
And as history told,
The old ways go out in a blaze.

As a new age begins,
The way of the Westernesse comes to an end.
As a new age begins,
The ways of the old must apprehend.
It's the nature of time,
That the old ways must give in.
It's the nature of time,
That the new ways comes in sin.

Standing, he adjusts his belt, gathers his things and then goes to wake Ellisidil to change the evenings watch. Before sleep, he thinks of Evael and his heart is at peace once more.

Artorius slepted silently, a welcomed respite since most times it was never without interuption from a wild noise while Ranging or being shook awaken by a company member to take over the nights watch. On this night, his dreams led him down a seldom used memory. That of his father...

The moment was past quickly, but the dream was vivid enough and the clarity of the sounds was almost crystal clear.
There he sat a boy, listening to his fathers tales of the wide world. On this evening by the fire, he spoke of the Rhohirrim and their legendary cavalry. Although first to admit he never desired to be a mounted fighter, his father often spoke fondly of their horsemanship and how feared their charges were in war. With a lute in his hand, he sang of their exploits just as the dream slowly ended and whirled into blackness once more.

"Stormclouds, fire and steel,
Death from above make their enemy kneel.
Foes feel their doom on the winds,
Death from above, it’s an army of kings.."

The Fellowship had broken, by Artorius' hand it seemed, however it was a difficult choice but yet one which felt like it would of been fated. Some paths lead to empty treasure chest or broken bridge but no matter the outcome another path would always seem to reveal itself whether someone was looking for it or not.

The Ranger walked the clear, well kept paths of Hobbiton-Bywater, led and followed by two Bounders. He had arrived at the Shires borders earlier that morning and explained his wishes to stay at The Green Dragon, to which after an hour or twos discussion between the Bounders and their superiors, it was finally granted, mainly due to the fact they recognised his look as that of a Ranger and knew his folk were friends.

"The heart of the Shire is a truely beautiful place, so green and verdent. Is this due to the water which runs through it?"

No reply, now he was welcomed but clearly the Bounders had no interest in small talk, prefering to call between themselves about what they had for breakfast or what they would cook for dinner. Artorius felt lucky when they murmered a "yes", "no", or "nothin' to do with me" to him after a question or two he posed them, but he just assumed this was how some of the Halflings felt about outsiders.
After a few more kilometers they arrived at the Green Dragon, it was in a little square and was decroated with some simple bunting and a wooden sign. The building itself was semi underground, well "underhill", but part of it was built out of the earth and surprisingly looked like it may be possible for the Ranger to bend down only a small ways and fit in.

"There you go, remeber you have been approved to stay in the Shire for three days and nights, then you are to be on your way. If you cause no trouble you may be welcomed back for a while longer but for now, keep your nose clean Longshanks." The shorter and grumpier looking for the Bounders left with a warning, a little difficult to take very seriously but a warning still. Artorius intended to play by the rules of course but he still forced back a laugh, for it was an amusing sight to be seen.

Entering the Green Dragon, the warmth of the fire and the smell of beer and pipeweed struck him instantly, but it was a pleasant mix of all three, none of them overpowering. As he shut the round door behind him, all stresses melted away from his body and he took a deep breath in. He had made it.

Then the entire Inn fell silent and stared at him.

A loud clap of thunder echoed in the night sky, although it was the lightning and heavy rain which awoke the Ranger moments before. Not entirely unexpected but certainly undesired, the weather was grim and bleak much like the surrounding forest area. Artorius had read the signs and already prepared, having created a makeshift hammock from his strong cloak and rain cover from a special Elven material he traded for several Kingsfoil leaves with some Elven folk whilst he was with the company several weeks back.

He chewed his bottom lip, frowning at the storm. He was a long way from the Shire, and the cosy little tavern "The Green Dragon" which had been a very comfortable and, after the initial meeting, welcoming place. He recalled the songs and stories, of the fresh pipe weed smell and good company and the peaceful days wandering the Shire, experiencing the life of Hobbits. It was indeed magical, but he was still an outsider and he had to leave after his time was spent. After seeing the lives of the Halflings and their families, the Dúnedain decided to make his way North to see his old village. Artorius was still exiled but he could certainly check from afar and make sure all was well. Most likely they had moved on but a large moving village was easy for a Ranger to track.

The sun rose warm and the early morning dried out the nights rain rather quickly. After a quick breakfast and the breaking of camp, Artorius took to the hidden forest path again. He made a quick journey through the thick undergrowth, and was upon the lands of Evendim by late afternoon. As the skies began to darken and the veil of night gently crept over the sky, the Ranger knew from the surrounding areas that he was close. He decided to stay as far back as his eyesight would allow to avoid any scouts and found a huge oak to climb and observe the village from. Nearing the top, he slowed his ascent to a crawl and kept his cloak deep over him to blend in with the bark. After minutes he finally reached a strong viewing postion which allowed him to behold... a ransacked dwelling with a mass grave meters away from it.
