History: Born the 28th day of Nachhexen to a small family of farmers just east of Brandtsdadt, Saraphina Tolzen spent most of her earliest years strapped to her mother, Marlene while she tended to the home of her parents and older brother, Wilhelm. But as Saraphina grew and began to walk on her own, she became very close to her older brother, who would spend countless hours with her while he tended to his chores. She would follow him wherever he went and he would tell her of the things he knew, answering as many of her questions as he could.
In the summer of her 5th year, her brother began spending much of his free time with their father Friedhold, learning of weapons like the pike, crossbow and sword. Though she wanted to learn with her brother, her parents would not allow it, as she was both very young, and a girl. Saraphina would not be denied, however, and she would steal away behind the tool shed and spy upon her father and brother while they practiced and drilled with various weapons and techniques. This went on for several seasons, crafting swords from discarded tree branches or broken tool handles and mimicking her brother and father's every movement. Though her brother had discovered her secret, he never let on to his father, winking to her behind the shed when their father wasn't looking.
Several years later, in the summer of her 10th year, her secret was discovered one evening when her father, having need of a tool from the shed to repair a chair, stumbled on her "martial pursuits". After the evening meal had been finished and the chores were tended to, Saraphina and Wilhelm headed out behind the shed to spar with wooden swords he had made to practice with. As their father approached the shed, he heard the clicking of the swords as they struck. Curious who Wilhelm could be sparring with, he peeked around the corner of the shed and was rendered speechless at the scene before him. Not only was his son performing the drills taught to him flawlessly, but his 10-year old daughter was performing them as well! Watching in silence for several minutes as both combatants moved back and forth with catlike grace and speed, Friedhold could do nothing but smile with pride at both of his children. Without a sound, Friedhold left the two youngsters and returned to the small house, making a feeble excuse for not retrieving the tools he sought.
As time passed, and Wilhelm entered into manhood, brother and sister continued to practice with each other behind the shed, though now their father had created several archery targets and practice dummies for them to use. Then, in the summer of her 11th year, Wilhelm and Saraphina retired to the shed after the evening meal was complete, but there was no practice to be held this evening. Wilhelm sat his sister down on a small stool and, sitting across from her, he told her of his departure to join one of the Tilean Regiments. Shocked by her brother's decision, Saraphina tried to convince him otherwise, but her brother would not be dissuaded. As the tears formed in her eyes, Wilhelm told her of their father's service to Tilea, and of his plans to follow in his footsteps. He then showed her their father's sword which he had been given upon his ascendancy to manhood the several months earlier. When he had finished, the siblings sat in silence for a time, watching the sun set over their farm until darkness had claimed the countryside.
As the sun began to rise the following morning, Saraphina stood with her father and mother on the small porch of their tiny farmhouse watching as Wilhelm departed for Tilea. They stood for a long time after he had faded into the distance, Saraphina silently wishing she could accompany her brother on his grand adventure. Turning at last to follow her parents into the small house, she had no way of knowing what the next chapter of her life would bring...
