INTRODUCTION TO THE AU EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

(NOTE: The information contained within the educational briefs belong to Armageddon Unlimited, for the use of Armageddon Unlimited personnel, for their edification, growth within the unit, and promotion value.  Unauthorized users will be reported to the powers that be for hacking activities on this web site.  Officers of Command level (Battalion Commander and above) are authorized to grant access as necessary.  You are not authorized to access the ED OPPS unless explicitly told you are.)
The educational opportunities made available to the personnel of Armageddon Unlimited exist for the edification of those willing to put more effort into learning about this unit, about the thoughts and understanding, goals and vision of the commander, to share those thoughts, understanding, goals, and vision, even if in a unique way.  NONE OF THESE OPPORTUNITIES ARE MANDATORY!  These are placed here for you, a MechWarrior in Armageddon Unlimited, but are not required for you to be able to advance.  Indeed, there are three ways you can advance in this unit...
  1. If you are asked if you would like to be placed in a position of authority, such as becoming a Lance Leader, and you accept, you will be Breveted to the rank necessary to fill the position.  The general definition, modified for purpose and clarity for this page, is "...to appoint, promote, or honor by brevet; a promotion to a higher rank with limited exercise of the higher rank's privilege's".  In other words, if you are invited to take, and you accept, a position you will be bumped to the rank necessary to fill the position, without actually gaining the rank; if you are an E3 Corporal in AU, but you're invited to become a Lance Leader, you will have the responsibilities required to be a Lance Leader, you will be given access to the Leaders forum, you will gain the honorary rank of E4 Sergeant, and you will be treated as a Sergeant, but you will be a Sergeant in name only, taking orders from higher.

  2. On reaching a certain number of Promotion Points for your activities in AU, including your real-life and BattleTech / MechWarrior life activities prior to joining us, your age and experience, the sum received from Awards you've earned, your Participation in the forums, in combat drops and training, and/or through Time-in-Service, you may be promoted.  These are not breveted ranks to fill positions, but your actual rank; if you were breveted to a rank in order to hold a position, but then you actually manage to achieve the rank through Promotion Points and/or Time-in-Service, then the brevet goes away and you gain all of the privileges of your new rank/position combination.

  3. Finally, you're welcome to work through the ED OPPS made available to you through links in various places, especially on our forums.  These points work toward promotion in combination with the aforementioned Promotion Point scheme, they just make your move a good deal faster.  Understand just how competitive Armageddon Unlimited's rank requirements are; you are competing against every MechWarrior in the unit, except the CO, so as you achieve more you are raising the bar for others to achieve and, as they achieve more, they are raising the bar for you.  There are several places in your growth for completion and accomplishment to take place, but keep in mind that all of those are averaged together, to give an overall representation of your experience in the unit.  If you are doing well in, say, three of those aspects, but not well in the fourth aspect, the individual doing well in all four aspects will have a higher average, and is more likely to achieve higher rank and/or position more quickly.

INTRODUCTION TO THE AU EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES (cont'd.)

There is no other unit/clan in this GAME universe that does this; why Armageddon Unlimited?
  1. I (Colonel Kay Wolf/Paul Emerson) started this unit, under another name, in late 1984-early 1985.  BattleTech has always concerned itself with various levels of honor borne of nobility, ancient ideals no longer truly extant on our real-world Earth; I ran my geek tabletop unit in the most honorable fashion possible, wrote tons of short stories about the exploits of the unit, built, rebuilt, polished, rebuilt, and polished, yet again, a true-woven history matching, paralleling, and advancing with the history of the BattleTech universe.  In short, for me, the lore of AU is absolute, as much as if it were a solid part of the BattleTech universe created in 1982, run by FASA Corporation until 2001, and lovingly cared for since by Catalyst Game Labs, Fantasy Productions, and other owners and developers since that time.

  2. In mid-late 1997, the Equal Opportunity Destroyers, in line with the BattleTech universe rolling out old leaders for new, rolled in Kay Wolf and changed the name to Armageddon Unlimited, with the help and guidance of the online co-founder Jerry.  From that point, I have always tried to be careful to preserve what is, while also taking suggestions and recommendations -as harsh as some of them have been- and continued to develop this unit.  Though the overall goal of culture for this unit is that we fight as honorably as possible, honor is neither corporate nor is it something to be had overnight; regardless, there has been a strong culture of honor in the past iterations of AU, and I intend to keep that culture alive.
So, in order to keep that culture alive, those who want to find themselves, eventually, in positions of authority, power, and responsibility, who wish to be able to make changes, to help shape the future of the unit into something... more..., will find themselves looking at how to achieve that future.  As many of the other ways are a simple matter of participation, timing, and playing along with the unit, they do not cover all angles; the final angle, or the first even, if you will, is found here, in the educational opportunities.  Those who don't take advantage of them will find themselves having a much longer climb upwards, though this time will allow them to gain a cultural aptitude / attitude similar to those who do take advantage.

This is not foolproof, of course, taking advantage of our educational opportunities, as there will be those who put in the effort and still fail to get out of it what is intended, due to their own aspirations.  However, those who take advantage and find themselves in positions of authority will be seen for what they are, and their growth will be slowed, if not halted.

It sounds like you have some real control issues, there, Kay?
Perhaps I do.  However, if you spent thirteen (13) years building a unit on paper for a game universe you love more than certain family members, and an additional sixteen (16 as of this writing, 140123) years building the online version of that mercenary unit, don't you think you would be protective?  Now, let's add in the fact that three times I have had people try to usurp my authority, to pervert or, at least, destroy my dream with this unit in this universe, and proved themselves to be individuals incapable of understanding what this unit means to me, how long I've worked on it, and had far less experience than I did when they tried to take it; wouldn't you be reticent to grant authority to those who show themselves to be that way, again?

Okay, but it's ONLY a GAME UNIVERSE!  Surely, it can't mean that much to you?
If you found yourself asking that question, and you want to have a command position in Armageddon Unlimited, you have a lot of things to get beyond before you can EARN that command.

INTRODUCTION TO THE AU EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES (cont'd.)

Fine, but what will I get out of this if I do the hard work and get where I want to be in the unit?
By then, you will well understand what it took for you to get there, what your responsibilities and privileges are, and why I am adamant concerning growth in the unit, rather than just appointing someone I, or someone else, believe will do the best work in that position, and perhaps even comes highly recommended, but then turns out to be a lazy good-for-nothing just in the position for the spotlight.  EARNING your way is the best way to assure your loyalty to the unit and it's integrity, and shows you're willing to go through some extra stuff you wouldn't have to do anywhere else.  Finally, you will have my respect, and my trust in you will be a lot higher.

Alright, so earning respect, and earning one's way is a lost art, I get that.  So, tell me what I would need to do?
The best way to answer that is to send you to the Positions thread in our forums, where you can read what is required to attain to each of the ten levels of completion in Armageddon Unlimited.  When you get there, understand first that each post after the introduction is its own level, second that none of these are as complex as they look, but they require you to read them word-by-word, line-by-line to understand them, and third that these are always subject to change, depending on the development of the unit.  For each of these levels, you should find a plethora of links to rank, awards, and ED OPPS on secure pages; complete these to gain a score for how well you did and Promotion Points toward rank.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, and I will answer you as quickly as possible.

If you decide to take on the challenge of the opportunities granted you, then I look forward to seeing you up in Officer's Country soon. (O7)

On completion of the Enlisted/All Personnel Education Opportunities, you may wish to continue advancing through the Non-Commissioned Officer/Leadership Continued Education.

Armageddon Unlimited (we are the ONLY originals) started in 1985 as Red Death Squadron, re-designated in '87 as Wolf's Cavaliers, again in '92 as Equal Opportunity Destroyers, once more in '95 as Shadow Blade/Lynx Lancers and, finally, in 1997 as Armageddon Unlimited for MW2: Mercs, MW3, MW4, MW: O and MW: T.  Each new name has been advanced as a result of a new Commanding Officer and/or a new era of BattleTech, the final change being specifically for MechWarrior.  So, you imitators out there claiming Armageddon Unlimited as your name, make sure you hold to a high and honorable standard, or we're comin' for ya.  'Nuff said.
